so, no mentions of these women effectively being state police, untouchable because they were technically all counted as being wives of the king and thus touching them was touching the property of the king? No mention that they fought mainly to keep the slave trade going strong as the whle nation was built upon it? No mention that the invading europeans were there in an attempt to stop said slave trade? yeah thought so.. all they saw was "stronk wahmen" and from here decided history should be rewritten. This is bad fiction barely rooted in reality thats shown here. Nothing historical in there except at the barest surface level of "europeans attacking african country that uses women as soldiers".

Dahomey had communities that were considered slave havens that protected people from colonial forces. It was people selectively chosen through their connection to a Dahomey individual or when American supply lines closed down and they wanted to hold people just in case. However, Dahomey people were only able to distinguish themselves from other African peoples by providing slaves themselves and so horrible outcomes stemmed from desperate measures to adapt when Europeans had surpassed them as power-brokers in the region. The slave-trade would have existed with or without the Dahomey empire, but their history with France and England should be viewed as provoked and complicit involvement with Western intentions for a slave market that acted to facilitate an inevitable outcome for Europe sooner because they were better at gathering slaves. There is not a lot of moral leadership you can glean from them, but knowing the desperation and arguable pragmatism if you remove immoral attribute from your criteria of what defines pragmatism. I think that and their religion (verdure? …cannot remember) make them comparably powerful people worth learning about. But seriously, they could not have picked a worse name than Woman King — a name that basically sums up all the anti-woke comments in the response that may seem dumb, but then you count ticket sales and viewer numbers and realise their world is the one you have to live in.

This movie is not woke enough. Why not hire a full African born cast? Well, it's a fantasy movie, because facts where left out, just to display the strength of, well, you know. At least with Predator Prey, they hired real American born Indians. Let's cancel this movie in modern woke fashion.

John Boyega got some fine dashikis in the movie.

I feel like the discussion happening in the comments is so necessary. However, when it comes to historically inaccurate media, I can't help but feel as if the sheer amount of people pointing out that the Dahomey tribe owned slaves is disproportionate for me considering how other EQUALLY historically inaccurate media hasn't caught this much flack. For example, Hamilton had a diverse cast and completely ignored the founding fathers direct role in the slave trade, but I didn't see this amount of critique for the play on the account of that in particular. If we can praise Hamilton for its storytelling and overall sentiment while acknowledging its inaccuracies, I think we can wait it out and do the same for this film. Should Viola have picked another tribe for this? Possibly! But I say it's a good idea to give the movie a chance on its own merit like we do plays like Hamilton. We can acknowledge the romanticization of darker historical elements while acknowledging good story telling if it exists. I enjoyed Hamilton in spite of the fact that George Washington, a slave owner, was portrayed so romantically. Let's not be selective with our outrage.

Film industries own by whites (ex-slavemaster)and they know our story more than us.Who destroyed the dahomey empire and who was the destroyer. The ex-slavemaster is the master of hiding your african story. The new trending is movies of african ourstory. This can not satisfy our souls and what about films before slavery.

  47. Barna says

The movie wants to portray a heroic fight against french, who want to enslave african people. While in reality this "kingdom" was the center of slave trade and they did want to defend this "lifestyle". Another cornerstone how there is a need of some real life Wakanda, while there is none. African history is not beautiful and black people enslaved their own. That's the truth. Nothing to see here.
